Here’s everything you need to know about the new Thor: Ragnarok trailer:
When it comes to Marvel, you can never live in peace. They have revealed a number of things at the San-Diego Comic Con, last month. One of the most interesting revelations include the Captain Marvel solo outing. The film has been set in the 1990s where the titular superhero will have to fight the Skrull empire, with some help from a young Nick Fury. They have also teased Thanos’ Dark Order for Infinity War and, posters and casting news for Ant-Man and the Wasp. However, the new Thor: Ragnarok trailer surpassed them all, blowing my mind to a whole new level. And to be very true, it’s AWEEEESOOOMEEE! Even Thor Odinson agrees with me:
We come to know about a handful of things from the trailer that has a lot of HULK, Valkyrie, Loki, Hela and Skurge. Thor: Ragnarok is based on the Marvel comic storyline of the same name that revolves around the destruction of Asgard. The title refers to Ragnarök in Norse Mythology where the world gets destroyed after a series of apocalyptic events, notably the death of Norse Gods. Before I start dissecting the trailer like a Biology nerd (which I’m not), have a look at it, yourself:
1. Easter eggs on Grandmaster’s tower
The opening scene of the trailer has quite a number of Easter Eggs that include head sculptures on the Grandmaster’s tower. Blink and they are gone. Starting from Beta-Ray Bill, the others are Man-Thing, Ares, Bi-Beast, Fin Fang Foom and (my favorite) the Incredible Hulk. While the inclusion of Hulk among the other character heads can be a nod towards him being the Gladiatorial champion, does it also mean that the others have been there at some point of time? Well, you never know when MCU Easter Eggs turn into reality. Remember the name of F-22 jets in the Iron Man movie? Whiplash 1 and 2. Whiplash? Yes, the antagonist in the Iron Man sequel.
If you look around the tower, you can see space debris falling from jump gates (or portals) to which we have been introduced in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. You can also find the Grandmaster’s arena beside his tower where the epic Thor vs Hulk gladiator match will take place in the movie.
2. Bruce Banner is back!
Since the first Ragnarok teaser, people were blind-guessing that the film will only have Dr. Bruce Banner’s alter ego and not himself. But, like always, Marvel bowled them over by including a lot of Bruce Banner in the new trailer. We get to see him wearing a blazer over a funky T-shirt, although how they came into his possession in a planet like Sakaar is still unknown. We get to know that Thor lost his hammer recently (from the teaser itself) and is making a team to fight against Hela and stop the impending Ragnarok – “the end of everything.” As promised by Chris Hemsworth, this film is surely going to be the best buddy-trip till date but I can’t stop being pessimistic ’cause every time they meet, things don’t go that well.
3. Epic Gladiator match
No matter how the film turns out to be, I can bet my money on one thing -the gladiator match between Thor and Hulk is going to be epic in all forms. Based on the few frames that are in the trailer, the match will be of majestic proportions and our two favorite characters would give their best to become the champion. Personally, I love the way Thor lies to Hulk about his easy win as in the very next scene, we find Hulk smashing him into the wall of the arena. Want to catch the act live? Here’s a glimpse of it:
4. Short Hair Bros.
Remember Science Bros. in the movie Age of Ultron? Remember Awesome Facial Hair Bros. in the Marvel comics? Let me introduce you to the league of Short Hair Bros.! No wigs, no straight hair, just handsome short hair. Both our heroes look their very best in these new avatars and form an alliance “just like the old days”. It is still a mystery how Hulk ended up on Sakaar after the events of Age of Ultron but his reunion with Thor isn’t pure coincidence. Or, is it? Let the Bro Pact decide.
5. Skurge and Hela
In the first teaser, we saw both Hela and Skurge in action and it was confirmed on various media that Skurge is in Team Hela. But we never got to see them together until the release of this Comic-Con trailer. Digging a bit into the history of Ragnarok in Marvel comics, Skurge (known by his alias Executioner) is an Asgardian who was first featured as a super-villain but soon turned sides during the events of Ragnarok on being questioned by his conscience. He sacrificed himself in the battle for Thor and his team to escape Hel and thus, delayed Ragnarok. However, if the MCU plays a different story, Skurge and Hela could be a badass team together, hard enough for Team Thor to defeat them.
6. The Valkyriors
We all know that Tessa Thompson has been cast as the Asgardian warrior, Valkyrie, in Thor: Ragnarok but who is she and why has she been absent in the previous two Thor films? Well, if you are an avid Marvel comics reader, you will be well-versed with her character. Brunnhilde a.k.a Valkyrie is the leader of the army of Valkyries who were tasked by Odin to carry the souls of dead Asgardian soldiers to Valhalla (the place of eternal rest in Asgard). From the teaser and the trailer, it can be easily deduced that Valkyrie is having an association with the Grandmaster but what is her true motive is going to remain a secret till the release of the film. By the way, do you know that she is the new love-interest of Thor?
7. Team Thor
One amazing thing about Thor: Ragnarok is that it takes place during the events of Captain America: Civil War. We had Team Iron Man and Team Captain America on Midgard (Earth). In Asgard, we have the brand new Team Thor comprising of Thor, Hulk, Valkyrie and yes, Loki. We also have Korg (voiced and motion-captured by the director himself) as another hilarious, yet important, ally of Thor. What I love about Team Thor? Handsome Hiddleston, Terrific Thompson, Kronan Korg….
….and Hulk fighting Fenris Wolf.
In the comics, Fenris Wolf is the brother of Hela and can also attain a wolf-like humanoid form. The movie won’t divert much from that relation as we can easily assume from the trailer that Fenris is an ally of Hela in Ragnarok.
8. Goddess of Death
“I’m not a queen or a monster, I’m the Goddess of Death” – Hela quotes to Thor while fighting him in what seems the climactic battle. She is the ruler of Hel and we can see her directing an army of dead to fight Team Thor, seconds before this dialogue. The immense power Hela possesses was easily deducible from the teaser when she stopped a Mjolnir strike and broke into pieces. In the new trailer, she even blocks the strike of Gungnir – the magical spear of Odin. The only thing left to discover now is who makes the strike? Thor, Loki or…. ODIN?
9. God of Thunder
All of us know that Thor is the God of Thunder and we have encountered him striking the same on various occasions in previous MCU installments. But Thor powered to his full potential? Thor: Ragnarok has a numerous jaw-dropping revelations but this is the second-best of them all. However, that’s not a thing to rejoice yet. If you have read the comics properly, Ragnarok also refers to the clone of Thor with similar powers as of the Asgardian. Although there is no Tony Stark in Thor: Ragnarok to create the cyborg, Hela can easily do the job on his behalf. After all, his entry in the trailer doesn’t look quite right to me.
10. Hulk can talk!
In the last point, we talked about the second-best revelation but tell me, don’t you want to know which is the best one? “Hulk like raging fire, Thor like smoldering fire” – hulk talking full sentences! In preceding MCU films, Hulk rarely uses a word or two like “Puny God” and “Hulk Smash” but in Ragnarok, he can be found talking to Thor about their characters. He admits that both of them are hot heads with Hulk being more like fire and Thor being water. Wait! Did I say Hulk Smash?
Bonus: Behold the fire demon, Surtur
When you are a MCU fan, you can be rest assured with one thing – there will be multiple villains in a film. Thor: Ragnarok is no exception as POP figures first revealed that the fire demon, Surtur was in the film. The Comic-Con trailer confirms his appearance in the concluding moments when Hulk jumps on him for a HULK SMASH! The Hulk doesn’t like to bargain at all.
Ya, I mentioned bargain because we are well-acquainted with the fact that Doctor Strange is in the film. So, who knows if he does the same thing with Surtur as he did with Dormammu. In fact, it was Strange who once defeated the fire demon in the comics. So, can we expect the following again?
