Here are 7 facts about Spider-Man Homecoming that will blow your mind.
Now that Spider-Man Homecoming reshoots are underway, it is perhaps the best time to discuss what can we expect from the upcoming solo Spider-Man flick. Two trailers and a few teasers have debuted on the internet creating a lot of noise and hype for the movie. The reaction, however, is justified because Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has created humongous expectations for MCU lovers since its introduction in Captain America – Civil War. No matter what clauses the Sony-Marvel deal had in between, the best thing about it was getting a reboot of the Spider-Man franchise minus the same-old origin story.
Before we start hitting our topic, thanks to all my viewers for their overflowing response to my last post and for participating in the March Giveaway. The winner of the giveaway (selected through lucky draw) has been announced at the end of this post. But be patient and go through the article, instead of scrolling down to the bottom at once. Having said that, here are the 7 Spider-Man Homecoming Facts that every Marvel fan should know.
Update (29th March): Now that the Trailer #2 of Spider-Man Homecoming has released last night, a lot of new things have opened up and a few confusions have been cleared. I have, thus, added a whole new fact (numbered as 8) before the Bonus fact and have also included new information in Facts 3, 4 and 5.
1. It is the 16th film set in the MCU and the 4th in Phase Three
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a culmination of everything that started since the first Iron Man movie, back in 2008, till now. Preceded by the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 coming to theaters this May and succeeded by Thor – Ragnarok coming out in November, Spider-Man Homecoming fits in-between in the same shared universe. Tom Holland reprises his role as the titular character after his debut in the 2016 blockbuster – Civil War. Marvel has a well-planned line-up for Phase Three and Spider-Man’s introduction in the very first film of the Phase means he will be having a very important role in the two biggies of the same Phase – Avengers Infinity War and Avengers 4 (which is yet to receive a title).
2. There are 3 main villains in the film along with other potential additions
Thanks to the clauses of the deal that Sony has made with Marvel, the latter has the creative rights over the film. This, in turn, will spare us from watching the same Spider-Man villains all over again. Marvel has roped in Golden Globe winner, Michael Keaton, for portraying the primary antagonist of the film – the classic Spider-Man villain, Vulture. Micheal Keaton previously portrayed Batman which makes him one of the few actors to play both a Marvel and a DC character. Like the technologically advanced Spider-Man of this Marvel reboot (thanks to Tony Stark), Vulture will also have an enhanced mechanical exoskeleton unlike the harness used by his comic counterpart.
The film reportedly has two more villains namely Shocker and Tinkerer. The former is being played by Bokeem Woodbine – a villain in possession of powerful shock-wave gloves. Michael Chernus portrays the infamous Tinkerer who is probably the mastermind creator of Vulture’s exoskeleton and Shocker’s gauntlets. The film also has two other potential villains (revealed in the trailer) in unspecified roles – Logan Marshall-Green and Donald Glover (famous for voicing the Miles Morales Spider-Man in the Ultimate universe).
3. Iron Man and Happy Hogan will reprise their roles for Spidey
Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man is back as Peter’s mentor in his solo adventure. What Marvel Studios has been doing in Phase Three is that they are interconnecting all MCU characters in someway or the other, setting the stage for the upcoming Avengers Infinity War. Last year, we saw Thor’s introduction to Doctor Strange in the mid-credits scene to imply that they will be joining forces soon. Similarly, Stark continues to play his role as Spider-Man’s mentor after he recruited Spidey in his team during the events of Civil War. Plus point for Marvel lovers? A few action scenes where Iron Man fights along with Spider-Man would surely make our day (or week, or month, or year, or whatever).
John Favreau reprises his role as Happy Hogan in Spider-Man Homecoming where he is tasked to look after Peter (obviously by Stark). In a teaser released for Homecoming, Happy is seen asking Peter why is he wearing his old Spidey costume just when Peter discovers that “Mr. Stark” has sent him a suit with “A Minor Upgrade”. If you have watched the trailer properly, you can get another glimpse of Happy in the background while Tony is speaking to Peter about Vulture (the “Flying Monster Guy”).
Update (29th March): Gwyneth Paltrow will also reprise her role as Pepper Potts in Spider-Man Homecoming. She was last seen in the MCU in Iron Man 3 and was mentioned in Captain America – Civil War in context of her break-up with Stark.
4. There will be a lot of Starkasm and suit upgrades
If something’s more important than Spider-Man himself in his solo flick, it is the presence of Starkasm (Tony Stark’s signature blend of humor and sarcasm) in the film. In the International Trailer, we find Tony telling Peter – “Don’t do the things I would do and definitely don’t do the things I wouldn’t. There’s a very little grey area and that’s where you operate”. Only Robert Downey Jr. has the potential to pull off such a brilliant character like that of Iron Man.
Update (29th March): To everyone’s pleasure, Tony Stark finally said those magical words that all Spider-Man fanatics were dying to hear. In the new trailer, he urges Peter to be a “Friendly neighborhood Spider-Man”.
When Tony Stark is your mentor, it’s not hard to deduce that your suit will get regular (and awesome) upgrades from the genius himself. Stark upgraded Peter’s homemade Spidey suit in Civil War but the Homecoming trailer confirms that the suit will get another major upgrade – Web Wings. The web wings feature is right out from the pages of the comics similarly like the holographic display that was introduced at the end of Captain America’s third solo venture (not solo actually ’cause it had a lot of Avengers in it). The web shooters have also been upgraded by Stark and now comes equipped with different types of webbing. Peter can also be seen donning his old suit in a few scenes in the trailer. Whether they occur at the beginning or end of the movie is still unknown.
Update (29th March): The real motive behind Peter wearing his old suit is that after the ship-event, Tony is angry with Peter’s casualness and lack of judgement, and demands his suit back. When Peter pleads Tony that he is nothing without his new Spider-Man suit, Tony annoyingly says that if he is nothing without it, he doesn’t deserve it. The ship-event refers to a scene, somewhere in the film, where Vulture rips apart a ship and Peter fails to hold it together for long before Iron Man comes to his rescue.
The Iron Mar armor will also receive an upgrade after the Mark XLVI was damaged by Captain Rogers. The new Mark XLVII is rumored to be inspired from the Iron Tech Armor of the Ultimate universe. Have a look at the new suit which uses three classic armor colors in its composition – Red, Silver and Gold.
5. Love MCU Easter eggs? There’s a handful in Spider-Man Homecoming
The MCU is a badass when it comes to putting Easter eggs in films. Spiderman Homecoming is no exception. In a scene from the trailer, we can see an image of Howard Stark in what seems to be Peter’s high-school. The presence of such Easter eggs also clarifies how well-connected this whole cinematic universe is. In another shot, we can also see a portrait of Bruce Banner among a series of notable scientists. The absence of Hulk since Age of Ultron is somewhat filled up by this reference before he appears in the MCU again, in Thor – Ragnarok.
Additionally, Kenneth Choi who played Jim Morita in Captain America – The First Avenger plays Principal Morita in Homecoming. Whether the characters will be connected or not remains a mystery till the film’s release.
Update (29th March): Captain America also has a cameo in Spider-Man Homecoming. In a scene from the new trailer, he can be seen in Peter’s Gym in a workout video titled as “Captain America’s Fitness Challenge”. With this cameo, Chris Evans has set a new record, i.e. he has appeared in at least one MCU film every year, since 2011.
6. The post-credits scenes will have connection with Infinity War or Black Panther or both
They say “A True Marvel Fan stays until the credits have finished rolling”. This trend has been followed in every single film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and since the first Avengers movie, the number of scenes has doubled in most cases. Nowadays, there are always two scenes after every Marvel movie – a mid-credits scene and a post-credits scene. The next three line-ups after Spider-Man Homecoming follows the order – Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther and Avengers Infinity War. Since the stage to Thor Ragnarok has been previously set up in the mid-credits of Doctor Strange, the Homecoming mid-credits will likely foreshadow Black Panther or Infinity War. However, my bet would be on the third Avengers team-up as the solo Black Panther movie has already been teased during the mid-credits of Civil War.
The post-credits might feature the origin of the antagonist of the next solo Spider-Man adventure. Next solo? Well, your question has been answered in the next fact.
7. Homecoming is the first part of a Spider-Man trilogy
Iron Man got his trilogy, so did Captain America and now even Thor is getting his own. That’s why Marvel Studios and Sony have decided to extend this revamped Spider-Man franchise and turn it into a trilogy, Homecoming being the first part. Marvel Executive Producer, Kevin Feige, said that Homecoming sequels will follow the thematic outline of Harry Potter films which means that every film would be based on Peter’s journey through a new high-school year. Sony confirmed the news about a sequel in development and slated a July 5, 2019 release date for Homecoming 2. However, a lot of things would change for Peter by then as the film would take place after Avengers 4 which is a way too long in the current MCU timeline.
8: Damage Control finally comes into action in the film (Update – 29th March)
Ardent readers of Marvel Comics will probably know that Damage Control is a company in the Marvel Universe which takes care of the mess after superhero battles. They basically clean up the mess and help to restore a place to its pre-battle condition. The first mention of Damage Control in the MCU was in Iron Man 1 where in the ending scenes, before Stark reveals himself as the superhero, a news about the company can be seen on the Television screen.
Damage Control kicks back in action in Spider-Man Homecoming and is basically the primary reason behind the rise of Vulture. Adrian Toomes a.k.a the Vulture runs a salvage company which did similar superhero-mess cleaning tasks. But he soon loses his job after the company is dismantled followed by the foundation of Damage Control – Tony Stark’s big-budget damage recovery project.
What astonished me is that how Marvel takes care of every detail in its Cinematic Universe. No one could ever imagine that a company which was teased in the first film of MCU would make a return in the 16th venture of the same.
Bonus: The song that plays in the Official trailer belongs to a famous band
Loved the song in the Official trailer of Spider-Man Homecoming? Well it belongs to the Indie band, MGMT and is titled “Time to Pretend“. Released in 2007, the song belongs to their album Oracular Spectacular and was deemed as an instant hit by music lovers. On New Musical Express’ list of the 500 Greatest songs of all time, this beautiful Indie pop song is ranked at 90.
